After working for 26 years as a professional actor, I created Buddy Powell's COMMERCIAL ACTING for ADULTS. I wanted to provide an inexpensive weekly on-camera opportunity for learning commercial technique. I encourage beginners, intermediates, and all to come to class and perform in a comfortable and supportive environment. I have personally developed an ongoing curriculum that addresses all aspects of television commercial performing.

Nearly every day in Los Angeles, television commercials are produced. Nearly every commercial produced is seeking new faces to promote their products. Baby boomers and seniors 60+ currently comprise the largest demographic of consumers in the United States. Now is the time for seniors and beginners who think that they might enjoy performing in television commercials to learn about the business, develop skills, and go for it!

Buddy Powell's COMMERCIAL ACTING for ADULTS are ongoing, continuous year-round classes taught by commercial actor Buddy Powell. Mr. Powell has performed in over 100 television commercials and is uniquely qualified as an actor, and as a credentialed teacher working with adult performers. He is a patient, caring, and amusing fellow!

Instruction includes:

  • The history of the television commercial
  • The advertising formats used in commercials
  • The basics of acting in commercials
  • The tools required for commercial acting
  • The interview/audition process
  • Understanding agency representation
  • Understanding electronic casting
  • Related careers in performing

Students are invited to perform regularly on videotape and have their work professionally critiqued. Emphasis is placed on developing the individual's unique qualities, understanding student's particular type, strengthening confidence, and developing professional skills necessary for entering the television commercial industry. Guest speakers include working professional seniors, commercial agents, managers, casting personnel and photographers. Many students from COMMERCIAL ACTING for ADULTS can currently be seen in commercials promoting a variety of products.

Buddy Powell offers a six-week Audition Monologue Workshop. This class limited to 10 students. Class fee is $100.00 for entire workshop, payable at first class. Class is held on Saturdays at TU Studios, North Hollywood.

In the pursuit of theatrical acting jobs, performers need to have at least one memorized monologue for various auditions and interviews. Most actors are prepared with a variety of monologues. A good monologue shows the actor playing a distinct character, enhancing how the actor wishes to be seen. You will be required to choose your own monologue (comic or dramatic) by the first day of class. Once you are confirmed to attend, I will provide you with resources for finding a monologue. The ideal monologue is one character speaking to another character. If you already have a prepared monologue, please choose a contrasting monologue for class.

Workshop covers:

  • Resources for choosing a monologue
  • Character Analysis
  • Physical Presentation
  • Memorization

By completion of 6 week course you will have a prepared monologue that can be used for auditioning purposes. Contact Buddy Powell to be included in next 6-week Workshop.

2016 Saturday Six-Week Monologue Workshop Dates

  • January 30 - March 5
  • April 9 - May 14
  • July 2 – August 6
